Valdez - Sea Otter

My photo/blogger buddy Tim visited here in Denali last week. We decided to take a photo trip outside the park for a couple of days. We traveled the Denali Highway east and then south to the town of Valdez. There we took a wildlife/glacier viewing cruise out into the Prince William Sound. In the marina we happened upon a cooperative sea otter seen above.

We watched the otter for over an hour, thrilled to watch as he dove repeatedly for mussels and clams on the bottom and return to crack open the shells right in front of us. If you look closely in the above image, you can see him use his teeth to break open the mussel.

He was so cool as he laid back, floating like a cork and feasted on his efforts.

The glacier scenics as seen in the above and second from the top image were also spectacular in the evening as the sun would poke through and light up the mountains behind the teal colored ice bergs from the Columbia Glacier. Good times.

Blue Skies.

I'm glad to see you got to take a side trip. Valdez is a beautiful place. The sea otter photos are wonderful! They are such cute little guys. Hmmm, a wildlife/glacier viewing cruise. I'll bet there are more wildlife photos upcoming.

I was wondering where you were? :) It was worth the wait though as you came back with some fantastic images. I especially like the expression on your 3rd pic but the last one is stunning as always.

Glad you got Sea Otters this time, we
were not lucky last year in Homer. No need to go to Argentina to photograph glaciers but at least those down there spoke Spanish.
About your comment in my blog regarding the blue crab eating alligators...what about all the energy spent by us humans in catching the beast, boiling them and then tediously picking the bits of meat out?

Beautiful scenery with those blue glaciers - I really like them. This sea otters look very cute, not like the giant otter seen in Brazil, they were very territorial and aggressive. I will post some pictures with them later.
The picture with the floating otter is cool, he seems to be so relaxed.

Wow! Beautiful and amazing shots! That otter is adorable. But boy does he have some TEETH. Wouldn't want to get too close.

It´s a month since you met your first celebrity in Denali national park, Crocodile Dundees grandpa. After another hundred bald eagles and fifteen bears we are now att home in Sweden. I have studied your picture galleries and find the pictures of bald eagles fantastic. I understand that my own pictures of eagles can stay in a hidden place in my computer.

Hello Ken, I have been trying to catch up since returning from vacation. How did you like the Denali highway? I traveled it by camper and would never do that again. We also had the chance to visit Valdez and it was a beautiful location. Your summer stay is flying by, I hope you are enjoying it, I know I am enjoying you photos and reading about it.

All pictures are wonderful, of course! I love the one where the otter has it's eyes closed and where you can see his teeth.. the third one from top down...

Fantastic series, thank you for sharing!
