Today's featured species is the red-shouldered hawk. I was very fortunate to capture both these images. The top shot of the flier was taken at Green Cay. He was perched and 40 minutes of patient waiting paid off when he decided to fly from the tree (had my settings prepared) and was able to get this decent flight shot.
The second image was captured in Loxahachee NWR. I heard a red-shouldered hawk calling and went over to explore. When I got close, he flew up with some kind of snake in hand. I tracked him to a tree were he was starting to eat his meal. By the time I got to the tree and positoned myself for the best light and lock the tripod the hawk had already eaten the snake's head off. What you see is the upper portion of the snake above the branch and the remaining snake dangling below.

Ken: Beautiful capture of the Red Shouldered Hawks. I shot one this Summer and didn't know what it was until someone told me about them. It was easy to spot it on a tree. I want a hawk flying but my delay for the image stabilization causes too much of a delay to do a descent job. I get a lot of birdless shots of the sky.
both are great shots, but that first one really wows me!!
