Valdez - Grizzly Bear

As promised this blog post will include images captured in Valdez, AK of Grizzly Bears.

As mentioned in the previous post, the Camera Gear Lackey and I were fortunate to see so many critters, in good light and tidal circumstances during the salmon run. As you can see in the above images, the bear is enjoying a freshly caught salmon.

I included the above image because it captures both a fishing bear and an eagle in the background of the same shot.

On this foggy morning this guy had just left the beach and was cruising the rocks looking for something to munch on.

This bear had gone up into this interesting looking ravine and was fishing in the beautiful green water.

The next post will be of a dramatic situation involving a moose cow and her calf.

I am at a total loss for words Ken!! These surpasses anything I may say about them. A whole page of WOW's are not going to be enough. WHAT a fantastic experience. I am green with envy!! :)

How many bears were there? Do they fish the whole day through or just mornings and evenings like some animals? Are they all brown bears? Any babies? Dueubf the salmon run, do they also eat things like berries for a variety? Id there much fighting between them? Are they a mixture of male and female? As usual I have a hundred questions and could go on and on. LOL!! Sorry Ken. Even if you answer just one or two of these I will be happy.

Joan,
My pleasure, will take them one at a time:
1) How many bears were there?
We saw at least 2 different individuals at this location.
2) Do they fish the whole day through or just mornings and evenings like some animals?
We witnessed them fishing primarily at the low tides when the salmon were exposed more, which coincidentally ended up both early and late day.
3) Are they all brown bears?
Brown bears are Grizzly Bears that primarily eat fish. These bears were Grizzly bears.
3) Any babies?
Carole and I missed a sow and two cubs that visited earlier in the day. If you are interested in spring cubs, coincidentally yesterday while in the park I was able to capture a Denali spring cub standing in the tundra. I just posted to my web site if interested.
4) Due to the salmon run, do they also eat things like berries for a variety?
The Grizzly bears do eat more berries, plants, roots etc. in comparison to the Brown Bears who concentrate on fish.
5) Is there much fighting between them?
We did not witness any confrontations like you see at Katmai, but there were few bears at this location and plenty of fish.
Blue Skies.

You are a star for answering all my questions Ken, thank you for taking the time to do so, it is much appreciated.

I have just been to your site and the pics are awesome. I need to spend more time browsing through the other galleries too.

These bears are fascinating.

Hi Ken,
Wow, spectacular photos of the grizzlies! Almost makes me wish I had waited a while and visited a little later, but there just was no way to fit that into my schedule. That said, it's great to see you capture such spectacular images, and having been there I can just imagine watching the bears fish in the tidal pools. Was this near the place where we watched the black oystercatcher the morning we went on the wildlife cruise?

It's good that Carole visited on a week when there was plenty of good wildlife viewing. I'm sure it was a week she will never forget. I'm guessing Roman is visiting now, but I don't have the calendar handy to check. Hope you guys have a great week.

I'm still in Pennsylvania and have not checked in for a few days. I have been unable to keep up much with my blog buddies and I will have to catch up when I get back home. It's nice being to keep up with your travels through the photo blog.

Ken: Neat photos, I wouldn't want to get too close to a hungry bear.

That bear looked hungry!
I'll bet he was pleased when he finally caught something.
Love the shot with the bear and the eagle.
