Bucks of Shenandoah

Nice to be home. But after being home for just a couple weeks, I still needed a national park and photography fix. So, headed out to meet some photography friends at Shenandoah this past weekend. Whitetail Deer bucks were the target species. We had decent light/weather Saturday morning and most of Sunday afternoon.

During the 2 days we were able to locate at least a half dozen decent bucks to photograph.

National park wildlife are not hunted, thus have no reason to fear humans, so are habituated our presence and conducive for photography without changing their behaviour.

I do like the name Shenandoah. Any idea of its meaning Ken?

What lovely specimens these are. I can see they are all nice and fat after the summer of good eating and should last them well into the winter. The antlers are also coming on nicely.

I regularly need my "bush-fix" as a friend of mine calls it and am going away next week for a few days to get my dose. These passed few weeks have been pretty awful so I desperately need it. :) Us bush folks can't do without it long. :)

All,
Thanks for the kind comments.

Joan,
Shenandoah is a Native American word. It has different meanings one of which being an Iroquois chief's name which meant "deer in the woods". Hope you can make it out to the bush!

Amazing shots, Ken!
I love deer, they are so majestic. I cannot imagine them not being afraid and only curious of the person flashing that light at them.

Beautiful photos Ken, it looks like it was a productive trip. I will be making my first visit next week for a few days and hope to do half as good as you. Brad

Ken a wildlife photographer can never go wrong with a jaunt up to the SNP this time of year.

All super nice shots and none are the bucks Willard & I encountered around the meadow Friday morning. I'm glad to see my old friend in the third shot you posted. He is the buck who's 2007 image I put in the PGC calendar. That year he was a 10pt, I see he's carrying a much heavier 8pt rack this year. He is easily identifiable by the small black mark just below the rear corner of his right eye
