New Mexico -Sandhill Cranes & Snow Geese

The week before Thanksgiving I could not have had a better time photographing in New Mexico while traveling with 4 other wildlife photographers. Our first stop was Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, 8 miles south of San Antonio, New Mexico. We had tremendous weather the entire trip. Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese are typically the main attractions at Bosque. The images above and below were taken at the crane pools on the main road as the sun rose. The temperature was below freezing, so in the morning it was interesting watching the birds navigate on and around the ice on the pools.

Bird numbers during our visit were approximately 6,000 canes and 22,000 geese. The geese shots below were captured in the agricultural fields managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service for the birds.

In the evening, we photographed the cranes utilizing the sunset sky to work on silhouette images.

I trust everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Blue Skies.

WONDERFUL PICTURES!

I actually did already look at many, many of your incredibly beautiful photos with my two 9 and 13 year old boys; they just love them, living ouselves in a protected nature parc we care about a lot!

Fantastic Sandhill Crane and Snow Geese shots! I love the second photo where the crane looks as if he is running across the water, and the first silhouette shot of the cranes. We did get to see Sandhills and Snow Geese in October while we were traveling, but didn't manage to get to any of the reserves to see them. Maybe another time we will, but until then I'll have to wait for their migration north.

A great trip on all accounts if I look at the pictures you and Jos have come back with Ken. It is not often that I see masses of birds together here except for flamingoes in the salt pans at breeding time.

I want to say a great big THANK YOU for your kind words you have always had on my blog. It was greatly appreciated.

Great lighting and great photos Ken. Can you talk to mi wife and see if she would let me travel more like you, LOL.

I thought the samething about the two bucks grooming on my blog post yesterday. They groomed each other for some time before sparring. Later in the afternoon they sparred again. It almost seemed like an older brother teaching a younger one how things were done. I will be posting some from them sparring both times in the future.
