Colonial Parkway

August is not always the best month to photograph in Virginia. Generally it is still hot and the young critters are growing up and in the gangly stage. Regardless, had the itch and had to go out and do some photography. One of my local haunts is Colonial National Parkway. It is usually reliable for deer. The weather was pleasant this evening, in the mid-70s with low humidity. There were plenty of deer out. Unfortunately by the time I found a decent buck (7:45 PM) and with a cloud bank blocking the sun, the light was challenging for photography. As you can see this buck is in the velvet stage (shot @ 1/125th/ F4/560mm). He was just starting to lose some velvet on the tips of his antlers. The fawn came out of the same piece of woods as the velvet buck along with his mother. Along with the doe, the fawn was absolutely locked in on my presence when exiting the woods. They departed quickly after I captured this photo.
